People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of gripper axminster loom operation; prepare to operate a gripper axminster loom; operate loom and monitor weaving process; and keep the loom and work area clean. Critical health and safety prerequisites Explanatory notes 1 Plant safety practices and procedures comply with Health and Safety in Employment (HSE) Act 1992, and workplace procedures. 2 Workplace productivity and quality requirements are met. 3 Competence can be demonstrated on narrow loom or broad loom. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of gripper axminster loom operation. Evidence requirements 1.1 Carpet construction is described in terms of pile and backing formation. Range creel, weft insertion mechanism, shed formation system, carpet take-up, gripper, gripper mechanism, jacquard pattern mechanism, end out detectors where fitted, pin gripper. Outcome 2 Prepare to operate a gripper axminster loom. Evidence requirements 2.1 Loom is prepared in accordance with workplace safety procedures. 2.2 Creel loading and thread up meet creel pattern requirement. 2.3 Weft yarn is in accordance with work instruction. 2.4 Jacquard patterning mechanism is loaded and prepared according to work instructions. 2.5 Inspection piece meets product standard. Outcome 3 Operate loom and monitor weaving process. Evidence requirements 3.1 Loom is operated according to workplace practice, and in accordance with workplace safety procedures. 3.2 Weaving faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure. Range 3.3 Warp and weft yarn faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure. Range 3.4 weaving faults identified in workplace inspection procedure. yarn breaks mended, thick and thin yarn. Pile yarn feed is monitored and maintained according to workplace practice. Range yarns are feeding freely, knots causing blockages are removed , pattern sequence is maintained. 3.5 Warp supply is monitored and maintained according to workplace practice. 3.6 Loom malfunction is identified and action taken according to workplace procedure. Evidence requirements 4.1 Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted according to type to prevent contamination. 4.2 Loom components are kept free of unwanted fibre during processing according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures. 4.3 Loom is cleaned according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.
