People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of spool axminster loom operation; prepare to operate a spool axminster loom; operate a loom and monitor the weaving process; and keep the loom and work area clean. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of spool axminster loom operation. Evidence requirements 1.1 Carpet construction is described in terms of pile and backing formation. Range 1.2 chain yarn, weft yarn, stuffer yarn, backing weave sequence, pile placement. Spool axminster mechanisms and components are described in terms of function and operation. Range chain beam, stuffer beam, weft insertion mechanism, shed formation system, carpet take-up, spools, spool chain, cutting blade, end out detectors, machine controls. Evidence requirements 2.1 Loom is prepared in accordance with workplace safety procedures. 2.2 Beams are loaded and warp yarns are threaded according to workplace practice. 2.3 Spools are loaded according to workplace practice. Range loaded in sequence according to pattern, chains tensioned, spools tensioned. 2.4 Weft yarn is loaded in accordance with work instruction. 2.5 Inspection piece meets product standard. Outcome 3 Operate a loom and monitor the weaving process. Evidence requirements 3.1 Loom is operated according to workplace practice, and in accordance with workplace safety procedures. 3.2 Weaving faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure. Range 3.3 Warp and weft yarn faults are identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure. Range 3.4 yarn breaks mended, thick and thin yarn. Spools are monitored and maintained according to workplace practice. Range 3.5 weaving faults identified in workplace inspection procedure. yarns are feeding freely, knots causing blockages are removed, pattern sequence is maintained. Yarn beams are maintained to ensure continued yarn supply. Range empty beams replaced, yarns joined. 3.6 Weft yarn packages are monitored and supply is maintained. 3.7 Loom malfunction is identified, and action is taken according to workplace procedure. 3.8 Weaving records are maintained according to workplace practice. Evidence requirements 4.1 Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted according to type to prevent contamination. 4.2 Loom components are kept free of unwanted fibre during processing according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures. 4.3 Loom is cleaned at end of a job according to plant requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.
