Explanatory notes 1 Rehearsal and performance for assessment will focus on at least three performance pieces of different styles and genres, selected either by the performance director and/or tutor, or by the candidate in consultation with director and/or tutor. 2 Assessment will be based on the candidate’s knowledge and skills as actor of one primary character in each performance piece. For each piece, the character’s role should involve no less than 20 minutes of active performance. 3 A candidate will present a written portfolio to support their acting performance. The presentation may be oral, audio-visual, practical, or a combination. 4 Definitions Comprehensive knowledge and developed techniques of acting implies wide acting knowledge and application of techniques. Typically, this unit standard would be part of an advanced course at tertiary level. Range rehearsal – from concept to performance presentation of selected pieces. Evidence requirements 1.1 Rehearsal performance demonstrates the ability to explore and make informed vocal, physical, and emotional choices to support and enhance character performance roles. Range choices relevant to – character realisation appropriate to genre and style of script; enhanced and energised performance; emotional, technical, and physical demands of role; demands of performance space; connections with other actors. 1.2 Rehearsal performance shows ability to develop creative ideas. 1.3 Rehearsal performance consistently realises performance concepts and agreed rehearsal objectives, follows director’s instructions, and utilises informed acting choices with accuracy and precision. 1.4 Rehearsal performance maintains professional attitude throughout. Range 1.5 examples of professional attitude include but are not limited to – learning of lines, punctuality, appropriate preparation and focusing techniques, responsiveness to directions and refinements, effective interaction with other actors and members of production ensemble, support for ensemble objectives, meeting demands of acting space. Portfolio includes evidence of comprehensive and perceptive research of performance pieces and character roles. Range research areas include but are not limited to – playwright's background and ideas, world of the play (setting in time and place, style, historic context, literary aspects). Range live performance – three performance pieces before an audience. Evidence requirements 2.1 Performance consistently portrays character, realising established choices and creative ideas with integrity. 2.2 Performance demonstrates a wide range of developed acting techniques appropriate to effective character portrayal and consistent with director’s guidelines. techniques include but are not limited to – vocal, movement, emotional, intellectual, spatial presence, pace, theatre creation techniques. Range 2.3 Performance shows ability to respond spontaneously to integrate unrehearsed incidents while maintaining the integrity of performance. 2.4 Performance is self-assessed, and includes identification of specific areas of strength and any aspects needing refinement. Range self-assessment of attainment of criteria includes but are not limited to – established character choices and creative ideas, developed acting techniques, professional standards.
