Explanatory notes

1 Rehearsal and performance for assessment will focus on two performance pieces that are selected either by the performance director and/or tutor, or by the candidate in consultation with director and/or tutor.

Assessment will be based on the candidate’s knowledge and skills as actor of one primary character in each performance piece. The character’s role should involve no less than 15 minutes of live performance in each selected piece.

3 A candidate will present a written portfolio to support their acting performance. The presentation may be oral, audio-visual, practical, or a combination.

4 Definition

Performance piece may be a scene, a short one-act play, a devised work, or a dance-drama.

Performance concept(s) and objectives for character portrayal are established, in consultation with director.

Range informed vocal, physical, emotional, and psychological choices (for realisation of character performance).

1.2 Rehearsal performance realises performance concepts and agreed rehearsal objectives, and follows director’s instructions and informed acting choices.

1.3 Rehearsal performance maintains professional attitude.

Range examples of professional attitude may include but are not limited to – learning of lines; punctuality; mental and physical preparation and focusing routines; focus on performance objectives; responsiveness to directions and refinements; effective interaction with other actors; support for ensemble objectives; responsibility for maintaining costume, make-up, and props.

1.4 Portfolio includes evidence of research of performance pieces and character roles.

Range research areas include but are not limited to – playwright's background and ideas, world of the play (setting in time and place, style, historic context, literary aspects).

Outcome 2

Apply knowledge and techniques of acting in live performance.

Range live performance – two performance pieces before an audience.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Performance realises established performance concept(s) and objectives for character portrayal.

2.2 Performance demonstrates a range of acting techniques appropriate to effective character portrayal.

Range techniques include but are not limited to – vocal, movement, emotional, intellectual, spatial presence, pace.

Performance shows ability to respond spontaneously to integrate unrehearsed incidents, while retaining the integrity of performance.

Performance is self-assessed, and includes identification of specific areas of strength any aspects needing refinement.
