Definition

Salon requirements , for the purposes of this unit standard, refers to any policies, procedures, and requirements of the company and/or workplace involved, and any ethical codes of relevant professional management, which collectively provide a standard that applies to all competent performances in this unit standard. It is assumed that such enterprise requirements exist in all companies and/or workplaces.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the types of micro-organisms common to skin and nails.

Range bacteria, fungi, viruses.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Micro-organisms are described in terms of their structure and method of reproduction.

1.2 Micro-organisms are described in terms of the factors that affect their growth.

Range moisture, temperature, oxygen, nutrients, pH.

1.3 Healthy and unhealthy types of micro-organisms are described in terms of their effect on skin and nails.

Outcome 2

Describe the spread of micro-organisms in a beauty salon.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Potential sources of micro-organisms in a salon are described in terms of how they could function.

Range client, technician, tools, linen, equipment.

2.2 Micro-organisms in a salon are described in terms of methods of transmission.

Range must include but is not limited to

– person to person contact, contact with tools, air-borne, droplet.

Outcome 3

Describe methods of control of micro-organisms in a beauty salon.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Methods of maintaining hygiene for the client and operator are described in accordance with salon requirements.

Range must include but is not limited to

hands, hair, respiration, linen.

3.2 Methods and materials used in cleaning/sanitising tools and surfaces in salon are described in accordance with salon requirements.

Range cleaning agents and methods; sanitising/sterilising agents and methods.

3.3 Methods of clean-up and disposal of waste materials are described in accordance with salon requirements.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
