Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: follow the
requirements for the machinery being operated; check
documentation and confirm requirements for the job are
available; make ready to meet the requirements of the job;
direct the crew to prepare the packing requirements; run the
machine in accordance with workplace practices; and clean
and carry out routine maintenance on the machinery being
operated in accordance with workplace practices.

Critical health and
safety prerequisites
Unit 340, Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in
the printing and graphic pre-press industries, or demonstrate
equivalent knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes

personal, product, workplace health, safety and environmental matters, and the
obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Machine start up, shut down, and emergency procedures in the workplace are
explained.
1.2
Risk awareness and hazard control measures, as circulated by the company,
are described.
1.3
Hazards and potential hazards in the workplace are identified and reported in
accordance with workplace practices.
Outcome 2
Check documentation and confirm requirements for the job are available.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Job documentation is checked to ensure that all specifications for the process
being undertaken are complete and any discrepancies are reported in
accordance with workplace practices.
2.2
Equipment and material requirements, as determined by the job specifications,
are confirmed as available.
2.3
Packing materials are selected to meet the requirements of the job
specifications.

Make ready to meet the requirements of the job.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Feeder is set to transport the blank, feed belts are clean, and timing chains are
set.
3.2
Forming block is attached to suit the blank.
3.3
Forming cage is set to facilitate accurate make up of tray.
3.4
Glue and delivery systems, and collapsing unit are positioned to the blank.
3.5
Trial run is undertaken on the machine to ensure that trays are accurately
formed.
3.6
Quality of the tray is confirmed against the job specifications ensuring that all
requirements have been met.
3.7
Counting system is set and adjusted to meet the packing requirements as set
out in the job specifications.

Direct the crew to prepare the packing requirements.

4.1
Packing requirements are determined to meet the specifications in the job
documentation.
4.2
A continuous supply of packing materials is ensured.

Run the machine in accordance with workplace practices.

5.1
Machine is run at an output level consistent with maintaining the required
production standards and quality.
5.2
Quality control checks are maintained throughout the run.

Packing is overseen to ensure that customer’s requirements are met.

Machinery is inspected and cleaned.
