NZQA registered unit standard 28978 version 1 Page 1 of 2 Title Demonstrate understanding of biosecurity relating to livestock Level 3 Credits 4 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are required to assist with livestock husbandry tasks in a pastoral livestock system. Classification Agriculture > Livestock Husbandry Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Welfare codes for all types of livestock are available from http://biosecurity.govt.nz. 2 Learners understanding of this topic may be applied to specific farming industry contexts, where relevant. Examples of contexts include beef, dairy, deer, goats or sheep. 3 Demonstrate understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning knowledge to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the candidate having that knowledge. 4 Performance of all aspects of this unit standard should comply with the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and the Welfare Code relevant to the type of livestock with which the candidate is involved, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, sustainable practices, and on farm procedures. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate understanding of biosecurity relating to livestock. Evidence requirements 1.1 Demonstrates understanding of zoonotic, communicable, and notifiable diseases relevant to the livestock context, and their implications. 1.2 Identifies the implications of biosecurity incursions. 1.3 Demonstrates understanding of the regulations and on-farm protocols for animal identification and movement relevant to the livestock context.
