Describe mobile machines and operate a mobile machine in an

Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the
operational features, performance, and limitations of mobile
machines; describe safe work practices and conditions for
operating mobile machines; check readiness of a mobile
machine for use; load and transport people and materials using
a mobile machine; and unload and shut down a machine, and
complete documentation, in an underground operation.

Unit 7146, Demonstrate basic knowledge and ability required to
work in an underground operation, or demonstrate equivalent
knowledge and skills.

Performance of the outcomes of this unit standard must comply with the following:
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE);
Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995;
Health and Safety in Employment (Mining Operations and Quarrying Operations)
Regulations 2013;
approved codes of practice issued pursuant to the HSE Act;
Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.

Industry best practice may be documented in management plans, control plans,
company procedures, managers’ rules, occupational health and safety policy,
industry guidelines, codes of practice, manufacturers’ instructions, and safe working
and/or job procedures (or equivalent).

An underground operation includes extractive or tunnelling operations.

This unit standard is intended for, but is not limited to, workplace assessment.

The mobile machines referred to in this unit standard are special machines used to
transport people, equipment and/or materials underground. These may include but
are not limited to – Eimco Personnel Vehicle (EPV), Personnel Equipment
Transporter (PET), Special Mine Vehicle (SMV) (also known as Drift Runner), Toyota
Land Cruiser adapted for underground use, Mine Bus.

Outcome 1
Describe the operational features, performance, and limitations of mobile machines in an
underground operation.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The operational features and performance of mobile machines are described in
terms of transportation of people and equipment in an underground operation.
Range
may include but is not limited to – safety features, interlocks,
instruments, controls, operating procedures, capacity, dimensions,
fire-fighting equipment, protection.
Outcome 2
Describe safe work practices and conditions for operating mobile machines in an
underground operation.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The safe work practices and conditions for machine operation are described in
accordance with industry best practice, manufacturer’s instructions, and
company procedures.
Range
may include but is not limited to – gradient, speed, lighting,
accessibility, ventilation, roadway conditions, roof and rib security,
compressed air, water, electrical services, ERZ (explosion risk
zone) areas, interlocks and alarm levels, instrument readings,
parking areas.

Check readiness of a mobile machine for use in an underground operation.

Load is transported in accordance with industry best practice and company
procedures.
Range
may include but is not limited to – operational checks, travel route,
gradient, speed, lighting, accessibility, ventilation, roadway
conditions, roof and rib security, compressed air, water, and
electrical services, ERZ areas, atmospheric monitoring.
Outcome 5
Unload and shut down a mobile machine, and complete documentation.
Range
evidence is required for one mobile machine.

Mobile machine is unloaded in accordance with industry best practice and
company procedures.
5.2
Mobile machine is shut down and parked in accordance with industry best
practice and company procedures.
5.3
Identified defects are reported and managed in accordance with industry best
practice and company procedures.
5.4
Documentation is completed in accordance with industry best practice and
company procedures.
