This qualification will provide New Zealand with graduates who have the essential skills and professional industry knowledge to operate safely under supervision in a wide range of service or operational roles within the sport, exercise and leisure industry.

Graduates will contribute to the health, cultural, social and economic wellbeing of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Graduate profile Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- take responsibility for own professional conduct while carrying out tasks as a member of a team in a sport, exercise, or leisure workplace or organisation;

- identify risks and respond to hazards while applying safe working procedures and practices within a sport, exercise, or leisure operation;

- apply communication skills and customer service techniques to respond appropriately to the diverse needs of individuals and groups as required by a sport, exercise, or leisure operation;

- apply knowledge of the sport, exercise, and leisure industry and its benefits to Aotearoa New Zealand to guide own practice;

- apply industry and role-specific knowledge and technical skills to own role in a sport, exercise, or leisure workplace or organisation.

Education pathway This qualification provides a pathway to a number of role-specific qualifications in the sport, exercise, and leisure industry.

This qualification could also provide a pathway to the New Zealand

Certificate in Business (Introduction to Team Leadership) (Level 3)

[Ref: 2453].

Employment pathway Graduates of this qualification will be able to work in paid or voluntary roles to assist with the delivery of sport, exercise, recreation or leisure services, programmes or operations.

For example: facility attendant, sport or recreation programme assistant, sport administrator or coordinator, membership coordinator, or trainee ranger.

Qualification award

Evidence requirements for assuring consistency

This qualification will be awarded by the accredited provider that has provided the training leading to its award. The formal certification document will include the NZQF logo, the Skills Active

Aotearoa logo, and the logo of the tertiary education organisation

(TEO) providing the programme.

All TEOs either arranging or delivering programmes that lead to the award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process scheduled by NZQA.

Further information can be found on the NZQA website.

All TEOs will be required to provide evidence during the consistency process to demonstrate how graduates have met the graduate profile. Critical evidence relevant to this qualification will include the following:

- industry feedback;

- self-evaluation (e.g. programme evaluation reports, moderation outcomes);

- graduate feedback;

- progression/destination information;

- evidence of relevant learning experience undertaken in an industry workplace/environment;

- NZ Register of Recreation Professionals (NZRRP) registration

(where appropriate);

- portfolio of relevant experience including learner selfevaluation (where appropriate);

- any other relevant evidence as appropriate.

It is strongly recommended that all individuals hold a current practising first aid certificate at the point they are awarded the qualification.

General conditions for the programme leading to the qualification

General conditions for programme

TEOs developing programmes should ensure graduates are given opportunities to practice and demonstrate competence within realistic workplace settings.

All learning and assessment within a programme leading to this qualification must be carried out in accordance with the following, as relevant to their role:

˗ relevant legislation including Health and Safety at Work Act

2015, Fair Trading Act 1986, Consumer Guarantees Act 1993,

Privacy Act 1993, and Human Rights Act 1993

˗ industry Codes such as the Water Safety Code, Boating

Safety Code, Outdoor Safety Code and OSCAR standards for approval and provider guidelines, Ministry of Social

Development, 2011

˗ organisational policies and procedures including Emergency

Action Plans (EAPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Learners should also be aware of and able to successfully meet the requirements set out in the Vulnerable Children Act 2015. Transition information

Replacement information This qualification replaces the National Certificate in Recreation and Sport (Core Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 1710].

Trainees currently enrolled in programmes leading to the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements by 31 December 2019 or transfer to the New Zealand Certificate in Sport, Exercise and

Leisure Operations (Level 3) [Ref: 3225].

The last date for entry into programmes leading to the replaced qualification is 31 December 2017. The last date for award of the replaced qualification is 31 December 2019, at which time it will be designated as discontinued.

It is the intention of Skills Active Aotearoa that no existing trainee should be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. Any person who considers they are disadvantaged may appeal to:
