Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to
perform, and perform, hand-held sawing of concrete on site,
and complete work operations.

1
Definitions
Specifications refer to documented instructions (oral, written, graphic) and may
include any of the following: manufacturer’s specifications, recommendations or
technical data sheets; material specifications; specifications from a specialist source
such as an architect, designer, engineer or a supervisor; site or work specific
requirements.
Workplace practice refers to the documented procedures specific to a workplace
which set out the standard and required practices of that workplace.

Assessment against this unit standard must be undertaken on site. On site refers to
a wide range of building and construction environments within which trade skills are
required, and includes concrete production and concrete construction sites.

For the purpose of this unit standard, hand-held saw blades used must be not more
than 500mm in diameter.

Evidence must be shown for the hand-held sawing of three cuts of differing depth
and situation – floor cut, wall horizontal, wall vertical.

Credit for this unit standard indicates compliance with industry practice. Industry
practice, for the purpose of this unit standard, refers to the ability to demonstrate
knowledge and skills that reflect the productivity, uniformity, finish quality and
material economies currently accepted within industry.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare to perform hand-held sawing of concrete on site.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Job requirements are identified and confirmed in accordance with specifications
and workplace practice.
1.2
Hand-held sawing equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment are
selected in accordance with job requirements and workplace practice.
1.3
Hand-held sawing equipment is set up in accordance with job requirements and
workplace practice.
Range
inspection of blade to ensure fitness for purpose, slurry control,
aligning to specified cut, security of cut portions.
Outcome 2
Perform hand-held sawing of concrete on site.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Hand-held sawing equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions, job requirements, and workplace practice.
Range
slurry control, feed pressure, water volume, ensuring security and
safety of cut portion during and after operation.
2.2
Hand-held sawing job is completed in accordance with job requirements and
workplace practice.
2.3
Hand-held sawing equipment is shut down without damage to the surrounding
environment, and in accordance with workplace practice.
Outcome 3
Complete work operations.
Evidence requirements
3.1
All operations are safely completed; workplace and equipment are cleaned in
accordance with workplace practice and environmental safety requirements,
and routine maintenance is carried out in accordance with workplace practice.
