Purpose
This unit standard is for people working, or intending to work, in the gas
transmission industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the requirements
for pipeline walking and inspections; carry out pipeline walking and
inspections on gas transmission pipeline easements; carry out vehicle
patrols on gas transmission pipeline easements; inspect and maintain cased
crossings on gas transmission pipeline easements; inspect an aerial span on
gas transmission pipeline systems; and communicate and document the
results of the inspection of gas transmission pipeline systems.

Definition
Company procedures refer to the documented methods for performing work activities
and include health and safety, environmental, site requirements, and quality
management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy
statements.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Describe the requirements for pipeline walking and inspections.
Performance criteria
1.1
Requirements for pipeline walking and inspections are described in accordance
with company procedures.
Element 2
Carry out pipeline walking and inspections on gas transmission pipeline easements.
Performance criteria
2.1
Conditions of right of way to easement are identified and adhered to.
2.2
Maps are read, and the exact area being walked is identified, in accordance
with inspection requirements described in performance criterion 1.1.
2.3
Safety precautions and safety equipment are used in accordance with company
procedures.
2.4
Land problems are identified, and their effects on the pipeline are assessed, in
terms of their location relative to the pipeline.

Leak indications are identified, and follow up actions are initiated, in accordance
with company procedures.

Current land use, application, and conditions are established and matched
against existing alignment plans and reported in accordance with company
procedures.

subdivisions, industrial developments, changes in water levels and
flows, required development or extension of waste areas.

Carry out vehicle patrols on gas transmission pipeline easements.

may include but is not limited to – urban, rural.
Performance criteria
3.1
Vehicle signs stating a pipeline patrol is taking place are attached to the vehicle
in accordance with company procedures.
3.2
Any unauthorised activity within two meters of the pipeline on the roadways or
within the easements off the roadways is investigated in accordance with
company procedures.
3.3
All warning signs on road frontage are confirmed as being fixed, clear, and
legible, in accordance with company procedures.
3.4
Any erosion, scouring of culverts, and/or slips are reported in accordance with
company procedures.
3.5
Streams through which the pipeline crosses are checked for scouring in
accordance with company procedures.
Element 4
Inspect and maintain cased crossings on gas transmission pipeline easements.
Range
may include but is not limited to – sleeved, concrete cased.
Performance criteria
4.1
Maintenance of concrete cased crossings is carried out, as required, from
patrols and inspections in accordance with company procedures.
4.2
Maintenance of vent pipes is carried out, as required, from patrols and
inspections in accordance with company procedures.

4.3

Results of the inspection are reported in accordance with company procedures.

plans, follow up actions;
internal, external notification.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
