Purpose
This unit standard is for people working, or intending to work, in the gas
transmission industry.
People credited with this unit standard are, in a gas transmission
environment, able to: prepare to locate pipelines; locate, verify, and mark
pipelines; and communicate and document findings for locating pipelines.

Definition
Company procedures refer to the documented methods for performing work activities
and include health and safety, environmental, site requirements, and quality
management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy
statements.

Element 1
Prepare to locate pipelines in a gas transmission environment.
Performance criteria
1.1
Third party requests are identified and actioned in accordance with company
procedures.

Records are utilised to identify pipeline type and location.

Locations of other underground services are established in accordance with
company procedures.

Equipment for location and marking of pipeline position and depth is prepared in
accordance with company procedures.

may include but is not limited to – pipeline locater, probe and
extensions, pegs, paint, potholing equipment, measuring wheel,
shovel.

Element 2
Locate, verify, and mark pipelines in a gas transmission environment.
Performance criteria
2.1
Pipeline is located using electronic location equipment in accordance with
company procedures.
2.2
Pipeline location is verified using electronic location equipment in accordance
with company procedures, with no damage to pipeline coating.
Range
2.3
electronic location equipment may include but is not limited to –
probe and extensions, potholing equipment, shovel.
Pipeline location is marked at the site in accordance with company procedures.
Range
may include but is not limited to – pegs, paint, signage, barriers.
Element 3
Communicate and document findings for locating pipelines in a gas transmission
environment.
Performance criteria
3.1
External parties are notified of the location of the pipeline in accordance with
company procedures and regulatory requirements.
3.2
All findings relevant to the job are reported in accordance with company
procedures.
Range
may include but is not limited to – relevant documentation, reports,
plans, follow-up actions.

Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
