Purpose This unit standard is for people working in horticulture. People credited with this unit standard are able to plan and monitor a water budget, and operate an irrigation system in a commercial horticulture business.

Element 1
Plan and monitor a water budget.
Range use of one or more of the following
– evapotranspiration readings, local meteorological instruments, tensiometers.
Performance criteria
1.1 The water holding capacity of a soil is determined in terms of irrigation requirements for crop selected .
1.2 Crop use of water is determined for horticulture crop and recorded on a daily basis in accordance with workplace procedures.
1.3 Readings or instrumentation are recorded on a daily basis in accordance with workplace procedures.
1.4 A water budget is planned and calculated that identifies when to begin irrigating and how much water to apply in accordance with workplace procedures.
1.5 Plant growth and soil water content is recorded in a daily diary for three consecutive months and monitored in accordance with workplace procedures.
Element 2
Operate an irrigation system in a commercial horticulture business.
Performance criteria
2.1 Irrigation equipment is maintained and pre-season maintenance is completed in accordance with workplace procedures.
2.2 Irrigation applications are monitored and altered according to water budget/ plant requirements.
2.3 Irrigation application rates and maintenance are recorded in a daily diary for three consecutive months .
Range records may include but are not limited to – volume of water irrigated, water budget data, crop growth, crop health, maintenance, fertigation, water leaks, crop nutrient deficiencies, blocked emitters.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
