Purpose This unit standard is intended for petrochemical operator technicians who operate complex plant from a panel.

People credited with this unit standard are able to operate petrochemical distillation equipment, and identify and respond to deviations from stable conditions in a petrochemical process.

3 Definition

Site requirements mean the site specific documented methods for performing work activities and include health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Element 1

Operate petrochemical distillation equipment in stable conditions.

Performance criteria

1.1 The distillation equipment is operated to achieve maximum efficiency.

Range product specifications, environmental impact, economy.

1.2 Upstream and downstream effects of the operation are assessed to determine operating requirements.

Process changes are reported and logged in accordance with site requirements.

Preventative maintenance and routine procedures are carried out in accordance with site requirements.

Range monitoring, trip testing, maintenance related log keeping.

Element 2

Identify and respond to deviations from stable conditions in a petrochemical process.

Performance criteria

2.1 Minor deviations from stable operating conditions are identified, and the steps to avoid and recover from them explained in accordance with site requirements.

Range temperature and pressure deviation, mechanical failure, vapour locking.

2.2 Deviations that may lead to emergency situations are identified and plant emergency procedures explained in accordance with site requirements.

Range flooding, fire, toxic emissions.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
