Purpose This unit standard is for people employed in the petrochemical industry.

People credited with this unit standard are, in a petrochemical workplace, able to: prepare to evaluate performance of batch process and production equipment; maintain control of the batch process and describe process waste; restore required batch process conditions in the event of process problems; and complete batch processing documentation.

3 Definition

Site requirements mean the site specific documented methods for performing work activities and include health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Prepare to evaluate performance of batch process and production equipment in a petrochemical workplace.

Performance criteria

1.1 Documentation for managing the quality of batch processes is located and explained in accordance with site requirements.

1.2 Materials are re-checked as being of the correct identity, quality, and in the specified amounts so that processing can begin and continue without shortage of supply.

1.3 The status of access equipment is identified in accordance with site requirements.

Controls are adjusted for specified production.

Tests for batch processes are identified and samples are taken in accordance with site requirements.

1.6 Critical operating parameters for the operation of each unit of equipment are identified.

1.7 Any deviations from each of the critical operating parameters are explained in terms of consequences.

1.8 Actions to take in the event of deviations from each of the critical operating parameters are described.

Maintain control of the batch process in a petrochemical workplace and describe process waste.

Performance criteria

2.1 Batch products, materials, and components are checked to ensure they meet site requirements for quality.

2.2 Products, materials, or components which do not meet batch specifications are set apart and stored in accordance with site requirements.

2.3 Corrective actions for out-of-specification products, materials, or components are initiated in accordance with site requirements.

2.4 Operational and associated activities meet time, quality, efficiency, and production requirements in accordance with site requirements.

2.5 The disposal or recovery of waste materials is described in accordance with site and legislative requirements.

Actions to be taken when emergency shut down procedures would be initiated are described in accordance with site requirements.

Restore required batch process conditions in the event of process problems.

Performance criteria

3.1 Possible process faults are identified and explained in terms of their causes and how they may be recognised by the process operator.

Range three faults.

3.2 Any faults and causes of problems are identified and investigated, and remedial action is taken in accordance with site requirements.

Range adjust, request assistance, emergency shut down, replace defective materials and components.

3.3 Problems which cannot be remedied within the candidate's authority are reported in accordance with site requirements.

Range significant deviations from quality specification, departure of process parameters from expected parameters under candidate's control, within operational area.

3.4 Normal process conditions are restored without delay and without compromising safety standards in accordance with site requirements.

Actions taken are communicated and recorded in accordance with site requirements.

Complete batch processing documentation in a petrochemical workplace.

Performance criteria

4.1 Completed documentation contains records of all final test results, weights, and instrument readings in accordance with site requirements.

4.2 Data related to setting up and adjustments of plant and equipment are recorded in accordance with site requirements.

4.3 Actions taken to deal with abnormal conditions and their results are described to identify trends and product quality deviations.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
