Title
Install copper pipe work according to plans and specifications under
supervision

Purpose
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work, in
the heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector of the
engineering industry. People credited with this unit standard
are able, under supervision, to: procure materials for copper
pipe work installation and set out a job; install hangers, pipes
and fittings and join copper pipe; and test the pipe work.

safety prerequisites
Prerequisite: Unit 2679, Join metals using torch brazing and
soldering or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes
1
Work site documents include contracts and any documented installation and
operating procedures for the system, mechanical service, and pipe work to be
installed.
2
All work site practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
safety procedures and safety plans (where these exceed code) for personal and work
site safety, and obligations required under current legislation.
3
Installation programme refers to any documented programme for installing the
system (eg, a construction programme).

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare to install pipe work.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Materials required for job match work site documents and supervisor’s
instructions.
1.2
Quantities of materials requisitioned and received are checked against
inventory.
1.3
Setting out of job is in accordance with work site documents and supervisor’s
instructions.
Outcome 2
Install pipe work.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Hangers are installed to structural and seismic standards specified in work site
documents.
2.2
Copper pipe is cut, bent, fabricated, and joined to the industry standard
specified in work site documents, including purging.
2.3
Hangers and copper pipe are installed and spaced in accordance with work site
documents and operational practice.
2.4
Installation is completed without unplanned cost or waste.
2.5
Installation is completed so that commissioning and maintenance can be carried
out without alteration to installation.
2.6
Installation is completed so that control instructions and identifications can be
read.
2.7
Installation is completed so that conflicts with other systems and components
have been resolved.
2.8
Installation meets installation programme schedule and requirements.

Outcome 3
Test the pipe work.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Pipe work test shows pipe work meets operational requirements specified in
work site documents.
3.2
Test record is produced and passed by inspecting authority specified in work
site documents.

This unit standard, unit standard 3234, and unit standard
3237 have been replaced by unit standard 26334.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place
before the expiry date set out below.
