People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to handle, move and store glass; and handle, move and store glass. Classification Glass and Glazing > General Glass and Glazing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Worksite requirements – refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 3 Range Glass can be moved manually or with overhead mechanical handling systems. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare to handle, move, and store glass. Evidence requirements 1.1 Glass is inspected for damage before handling, moving and storage and any damaged glass is removed to designated location in accordance with worksite requirements. 1.2 Lifting gear selected meets requirements of glass in terms of size, weight, type of finish, special characteristics of the glass and lifting gear certification. Storage arrangements meet requirements of the glass in terms of size, weight, type of finish, and special characteristics of the glass. Range 1.6 moving equipment includes – trolleys, retaining methods, provision for separation, lifting A frames. Path for movement of glass is checked before moving begins in accordance with worksite requirements. Range 1.5 lifting gear includes – josters, vacuum lifters, overhead lifting systems, glass grabs. Moving equipment selected meets requirements of the glass in terms of size, weight, type of finish, and special characteristics of the glass. Assistance to move glass is arranged to ensure that the process can be completed in a controlled manner without danger to people in the workplace. Outcome 2 Handle, move, and store glass. Evidence requirements 2.1 Techniques used to lift and place glass are in accordance with worksite requirements and are appropriate for the size and weight of the glass. 2.2 Protective clothing and equipment used is appropriate for the work and is used in accordance with worksite requirements. 2.3 Selected lifting and moving equipment is used in accordance with worksite requirements. 2.4 Glass is placed in storage or in the situation required by the next user without damage to the glass or the equipment, or danger to people in the workplace. 2.5 Procedures used to load and unload glass, Insulating Glass Units, and glazing materials are in accordance with worksite requirements. 2.6 Equipment used is checked on completion of work and is placed ready for reuse in accordance with worksite requirements. Range requirements include – fault reporting on vehicles used to carry glass, replacement of worn or damaged gear, location of equipment when not in use, certificates for loading apparatus.
