For each glass sample, starting materials were carefully measured out usingananalyticalbalanceandwasgroundedtoafinepowderwhereitwasthoroughlymixed andplacedinaporcelaincrucibleformeltingataround1000oC.Oncethesamplesweremelted, theyweremixedviaagitationthreetimesandthenquenchedbypouringontoabrassplate.A brasswasherwasusedtoretainacircularshapeandkeepauniformthickness.Afterquenching, eachsamplewasplacedinanaluminaboatforannealingatatemperatureof350oCforaperiod of3hoursusingatubefurnace.Annealedglasssamplesarepolishedforopticalabsorptionand fluorescencestudies.PreliminaryresultsshowthattheintensityofSmfluorescencespectravary withthebaseglasscomposition.
