Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to
assemble and fit, and assemble and fit, traditional drawers to a
cabinet using wooden runners.

Explanatory notes
1
This unit standard may be assessed against on-job or off-job.

This unit standard does not cover fitting drawers using manufactured runners. These
skills and knowledge are covered in Unit 25556, Assemble and fit drawers to a
cabinet using manufactured runners.

Personal protective equipment, appropriate to job requirements, is to be selected and
used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and manufacturer’s
instructions.

Definitions
Manufacturer’s instructions are instructions provided by manufacturers of
substances, equipment, and machinery used in furniture making. These instructions
may include details on safe and correct handling, use and storage of substances
and/or details on substance properties. Examples are labels on substance
containers, product data sheets, and operator’s manuals.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are documents containing information on toxic substances
used in the worksite. It is a requirement of the Environmental Risk Management
Authority that all worksites using toxic substances have an SDS.
Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or
other directions provided to staff. These may include, but are not limited to, ways of
managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production,
and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures,
company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare to assemble and fit traditional drawers to a cabinet using wooden runners.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Job specifications are obtained and explained in accordance with worksite
policies and procedures.
Range

1.2
Equipment is selected in accordance with job specifications and confirmed as
being in safe working order in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
1.3
Drawer components are selected in accordance with job specifications.
1.4
Adhesive is selected in accordance with job specifications.
1.5
Safety considerations related to the use of selected adhesive are explained in
accordance with SDS.
Outcome 2
Assemble and fit traditional drawers to a cabinet using wooden runners.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Drawer components are checked for defects in accordance with job
specifications.

2.2
Wooden drawer runners are attached to the carcase ends in accordance with
job specifications.
2.3
Drawer sides are fitted to draw runners and checked for clearance.
2.4
Drawers are assembled in accordance with job specifications.
2.5
Drawers are fitted to give an even, parallel clearance in accordance with job
specifications.

Machine and work area are made clean, clear, and safe in accordance with
