People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to
bend glass and bend glass.

Explanatory notes
1
Definition
Worksite requirements – refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality
specifications, legislative requirements.

All work to be done in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992 and Resource Management Act 1991.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Preparation of work area and personal safety precautions is carried out in
accordance with worksite requirements.
Range
1.2
preparation includes but is not limited to – selection and use of
protective clothing and safety equipment, identification of hazards;
may include but is not limited to – checks to ensure gas ports are
clear and gas feed is turned off, selection of equipment and
completion of maintenance checks, review of operational
procedures, clearing work area.
Moulds and/or patterns are prepared to match job specifications in accordance
with worksite requirements.

preparation includes but is not limited to – patterns supplied and/or
work and/or customer orders are checked for shape and radius,
where appropriate standard moulds are selected and checked,
where required new moulds are manufactured and special glass
supports are identified and arranged;
evidence is required of a minimum of two moulds and/or patterns.
Glass to be bent is checked in accordance with worksite requirements.

checks include but are not limited to – glass and processing match
with requirements of works or customer order or specifications (to
include type and thickness, make-up, orientation, shapes, size),
quality of glass (to include freedom from seeds, surface damage,
edge chips), glass size is within processing equipment limitations,
edgework requirements have been met.
Glass is washed in accordance with worksite requirements.
Range
washing includes but is not limited to – operation of washing
machine in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations,
use of hand washing alternatives where appropriate, checking of
washed glass for surface damage and stains.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Mould is set up and checked against pattern and specifications in accordance
with worksite requirements.
2.2
Glass is loaded onto the mould in accordance with worksite requirements.
2.3
This unit standard is
Mould is loaded into kiln expiring
in accordance with worksite requirements.
2.4
Kiln is operated and monitored, and adjustments are made in accordance with
worksite requirements.
2.5
Glass is removed from kiln when required cooling has been achieved in
accordance with worksite requirements.
2.6
Post-bending checks are completed in accordance with worksite requirements.

scratches or other damage; check of bent glass against pattern or
details provided on work or customer order.
Final inspection and/or testing is carried out to ensure completed product meets
legislative and worksite requirements.
