Purpose
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the construction industry with individuals who
have knowledge and practical skills to design and certify drainage systems.
The qualification is a prerequisite to registration with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and
Drainlayers Board as a certifying drainlayer, therefore it is comprised of compulsory
standards. A certifying drainlayer is responsible for ensuring both their own work, and the
work of anyone they supervise is done competently.
This qualification recognises a range of design, management and supervision
competencies in the drainlaying trade. Holders of this qualification are able to design
drainage systems, manage and coordinate with other building services the installation of
drainage systems, supervise drainlaying staff, access and apply relevant legislation, apply
conservation and environmentally considerate processes in the design of drainage
systems, and cost jobs for drainage systems.
This qualification leads on from the National Certificate in Drainlaying (Installation)
(Level 4) [Ref: 0077].
Special Notes
Prerequisite – National Certificate in Drainlaying (Installation) (Level 4) [Ref: 0077] or

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
