Purpose
The National Certificate in Construction (Supervisor) (Level 5) is designed to give people
credited with the qualification the skills and knowledge required by the industry of a
capable construction supervisor. The qualification is aimed at people already working as a
construction supervisor, or alternatively those wishing to move into the role.
The qualification comprises compulsory supervisory and technical standards designed to
assess a broad range of knowledge and skills. Supervisory skills include on-site
administration and supervision, knowledge of building enactments, preparation of
construction programmes, time management, knowledge and implementation of site safety
plans, communication skills as related to building sites, knowledge of drawings and
specifications, and preparation of order lists. Technical skills include knowledge of
excavations, construction methods, weatherproofing, exterior cladding, subcontractor
supervision, and principles of building design.
The elective section of the qualification requires people to choose a minimum of 9 credits
from selected specialist technical standards. This choice enables them to select standards
that meet their workplace requirements and offers the candidate career options.
People who have met the requirements of this qualification will meet the requirements of
the National Certificate in Construction (Leading Hand) (Level 4) [Ref: 1130]. The National
Certificate in Construction (Supervisor) (Level 5) also provides a pathway to the National
