Purpose

The National Certificate in Parks and Reserves (Park Ranger) (Level 3) is for people working in a recreational or natural park area. The focus is on a broad practical skill base and the competencies needed to provide safe parks services.

The compulsory section includes kn owledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in te ao tūroa, dealing with compliance issues, basic construction skills, maintenance of tracks, communication skills, park history and legislation, and customer service. The elective includes a large list of standards enabling candidates to tailor the qualification to their own working requirements and is intended as a stepping stone to further training.

This qualification shares many standards with the National Certificate in Conservation

(Trainee Ranger) [Ref: 0642] and is designed to recognise broad transferable and generic skills as well as specialised industry skills. It also provides a meaningful pathway to higher level qualifications for both Department of Conservation workers and Regional and Local

Authority park rangers.

Replacement Information

Version 1 of this qualification replaced the National Certificate in Parks and Recreation

(Level 3) with strands in Local Authority Park Ranger, and Parks Contractor [Ref: 1268].
