Purpose
This qualification recognises the skills required to guide clients in the caving environment
with particular emphasis on single rope technique (SRT) cave guiding instruction. Holders
of this qualification are senior cave guides who can instruct others undertaking cave
guiding at a level where the SRT skills would be required. This qualification also
recognises complementary knowledge and skills that support SRT cave guiding
instruction. These skills include group management, first aid, river crossing,
communication skills, leadership and risk management training.
This qualification contains compulsory unit standards and also the Sfrito National Award in
Risk Management. Holders of other sport, fitness and recreation qualifications, with
appropriate physical fitness, can progress into this qualification. This qualification may
also lead on to the National Diploma in Outdoor Recreation (Instruction) (Level 5)
[Ref: 1191].
Replacement Information
This qualification replaced the Caving Strand that was in version 1 of the National
Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Instruction) with strands in Adventure Based Learning,
Kayaking, Mountaineering, Single Pitch Rock Climbing, and Tramping [Ref: 0733].

Award of NQF Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided in section 7 of the New Zealand
Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Rules and Procedures publications available at
http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/acrp/index.html.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same Id may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
