Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the automotive electrical and coachbuilding
industries. People credited with this unit standard are able to: determine
lighting requirements and legal limitations for a passenger coach or special
purpose vehicle; determine types and number of lighting units, and their
positioning on the vehicle; determine circuit protection for the lighting; and
prepare lighting specification.

Definition
Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality
specifications, and legislative requirements.

Range
Special purpose vehicle may include but is not limited to – ambulance, motor home,
caravan, or any other vehicle designed for a specific application which requires
multiple battery installations and will be running power and lighting systems on the
interior and/or exterior of the vehicle.

Element 1
Determine lighting requirements and legal limitations for a passenger coach or special
purpose vehicle.
Performance criteria
1.1
Lighting requirements and budget limitations of the vehicle operator are
determined and noted, to enable the parameters for the specification to be set in
accordance with company requirements.
Range
1.2
areas to be illuminated, required intensity of illumination, operating
conditions, marker lights required, special requirements such as
areas to be kept void of illumination.
Legal limitations on lighting requirements specified by the vehicle operator and
any extra lighting required by law are determined and noted in accordance with
company requirements.

Element 2
Determine types and number of lighting units, and their positioning on the vehicle.
Performance criteria
2.1
Types and number of lighting units and their positioning are determined to best
suit the customer, legal requirements, and the available budget in accordance
with company requirements.
Range
2.2
main and dipped beam headlamps, fog lamps, spot lamps, search
lamps, stationary and rotating hazard warning lamps, cab marker
lamps, direction indicators, side marker lamps, parking lamps, stop
lamps, interior lighting for cabin, passenger area lighting, cargo
space lighting, step illumination.
Type, number, and positioning of the switches are determined to best suit the
lighting selected and the available budget in accordance with company
requirements.
Element 3
Determine circuit protection for the lighting.
Performance criteria
3.1
Circuit protection and relays required to protect the lighting selected and to
ensure reliable service are determined in accordance with company
requirements.
Element 4
Prepare lighting specification.
Performance criteria
4.1
Lighting specification is prepared, showing the technical specifications, itemised
costing and recommendations for its adoption, in accordance with company
requirements.

Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
