Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of engine management system functions.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Management control for various systems on an engine is described according to
vehicle and/or engine manufacturer’s specifications.
Range
1.2
The conditions sensed by an engine management system are identified.
Range
1.3
fuel injection, ignition firing and timing, idle speed, fuel supply,
emission system, self-diagnostic codes.
crankshaft position, engine speed, manifold absolute pressure,
manifold air temperature, engine coolant temperature, throttle
position, exhaust gas oxygen content, system voltage, park neutral
switch position, vehicle speed, air conditioning request, engine
detonation, cranking signal, automatic transmission fluid
temperature and clutch signal, power steering pressure.
The systems controlled from the electronic control module (ECM) are identified.
Range
fuel control, fuel injectors, electric fuel pump, direct fire ignition
system, electronic spark timing, idle air control, automatic
transmission torque converter clutch, air conditioning compressor
clutch, radiator cooling fan, power steering control, diagnostic
system.
Outcome 2
Diagnose engine management problems.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
2.2
personal safety; safety of others; equipment, vehicle, and machine
safety.
The symptoms of the problem stated are confirmed.
Range
customer's information, service manual information, testing the
vehicle.
2.3
Suitable test equipment is selected and used to enable faults to be diagnosed.
2.4
The activation routine for self-diagnosis is carried out according to service
manual instructions.

air, fuel, sensors, control.
The fault(s) and its cause(s) are located by system tests and observation.
Outcome 3
Rectify faults in an engine management system.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
personal safety; safety of others; equipment, vehicle, and machine
safety.
3.2
Suitable tools and equipment are used to enable system faults to be rectified.
3.3
Service precautions are carried out to prevent damage to electronic
components.
3.4
The fault(s) and its cause(s) are corrected by repair and replacement as
specified by the vehicle manufacturer's instructions, to enable normal engine
management system operation to be restored.
3.5
Self-diagnostic codes are cleared according to vehicle manufacturer's
instructions.

Please note
Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or
an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Consent requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
