Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the motorcycle repair
industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to
remove an engine assembly from a motorcycle frame, and
assemble and install a motorcycle engine.

safety prerequisites
Unit 15444, Repair a motorcycle engine crankshaft assembly;
and Unit 15445, Repair a motorcycle engine piston and
cylinder assembly; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and
skills; motorcycle driver's licence.
Explanatory notes
1
The following legislation, publication, and amendments are required to be consulted
and followed where applicable:
– Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992
– New Zealand Road Code, Land Transport Safety Authority.

Reference to suitable test equipment means industry approved equipment that are
recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a
professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.

Because of the particular nature of this unit standard, it is essential that the practical
assessment evidence is obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under
normal workplace conditions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Remove an engine assembly from a motorcycle frame.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
personal safety, safety of others, equipment and machine safety.
1.2
Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used that enable an engine
assembly to be removed from the frame.
1.3
Systems and controls are disconnected and/or removed from the engine and
transmission assembly without damage to the parts, and in accordance with the
machine manufacturer's instructions where specified.
Range
fuel tank and fuel controls, electrical connections, final drive,
exhaust system, cooling system attachments, hoses and pipes,
linkages.
1.4
The assembly is supported with suitable lifting equipment, the engine and
transmission mounts removed, and the assembly removed from the machine.
1.5
The removed assembly is supported in a secure position.
Outcome 2
Assemble and install a motorcycle engine.

2.1

Pre-assembly cleaning and preparation procedures are carried out according to
machine and/or engine manufacturer's instructions.

Engine component sizes, clearances and fits are to machine and/or engine
manufacturer's specifications.

all engine components that are required to be reassembled as a
unit, gaskets, seals.
A motorcycle oil pump is repaired to machine/engine manufacturer's
specifications.

An oil relief valve system is checked for serviceability according to machine
and/or engine manufacturer's specifications.
2.7
The engine assembly is assembled according to machine and/or engine
manufacturer's workshop manual instructions.
2.8
Balance shaft systems are timed according to machine and/or engine
manufacturer's specifications.
2.9
A fully assembled engine is fitted to the motorcycle frame and final adjustments
are made to machine and/or engine manufacturer's specifications.
Range
fitting cylinder head assembly, checking and fitting ancillary
components, priming and bleeding oil systems, starting engine,
checking oil pressure and circulation, pressure testing four stroke
engine, adjusting ancillary components, road testing and final
adjustments.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by
the last date for assessment set out below.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
