This entry-level unit standard is for people who handle cash
transactions or prepare accounts for payment in the hospitality,
retail or travel and tourism sectors.
This unit standard will be assessed in a service delivery context
and relates to the methods and techniques used to handle
payment transactions for customers at a basic level in a
hospitality, retail or travel and tourism workplace.

1
Definitions
Establishment requirements – any policy, procedure, process or agreed requirement,
either written or oral, that is made known to the candidate prior to assessment
against this unit standard.
Float – cash prepared and retained in the cash drawer to maintain a sufficient
amount of change for sale transactions.
Point of sale – place and equipment where customer payments are received.

Legislation to be complied with includes but is not limited to – Consumer Guarantees
Act 1993, Fair Trading Act 1986, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Human
Rights Act 1993, Privacy Act 1993, Sale of Goods Act 1908.

For the purpose of this unit standard, evidence will be required that customers are
greeted and treated in all interactions in a polite, friendly and helpful manner.

Evidence for the practical components of this unit standard must either be gathered
in the workplace or in a realistic environment where the candidate has to produce
product or similar for customers who have the same expectations for quality and
timeliness as a paying customer.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Point of sale is opened in accordance with establishment requirements.
Range
opening may include but is not limited to – time, access,
password, security.
1.2
Float is accurately checked in accordance with establishment requirements.
1.3
Security of cash is maintained in accordance with establishment requirements.
1.4
Documentation related to payment transactions is completed in accordance with
establishment requirements.
1.5
Equipment and materials required for a payment point are kept available and
ready for use.
Range
equipment and materials may include but are not limited to – cash,
cash equivalents, stationery, EFTPOS, scanners (fixed, handheld),
key pad operated registers, credit card processing equipment.

Handle and account for payment transactions in a service delivery context.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Customer payments are accepted at point of sale in accordance with
establishment requirements.
Range
acceptance may include but is not limited to – price is entered,
price is confirmed with customer, payment method is determined.
2.2
Cash is handled in a safe, hygienic, and secure manner before, during, and
after service in accordance with establishment requirements.
2.3
Payment transactions are accurate and complete, with correct payment
received and change given for product or service supplied to customer.
Range
payments may include but are not limited to – cash, credit card,
EFTPOS, cheque, vouchers, foreign currency.
2.4
Discrepancies in payment transactions are identified and recorded in
accordance with establishment requirements.
2.5
Payment point contents are made available for authorised collection during
service, if required, in accordance with establishment requirements.
2.6
Refunds and credits are processed, if required, in accordance with
establishment requirements.

2.7
Contingency plans are followed in the event of power or equipment failures in
accordance with establishment requirements.
