SMARTcomputing - Tiered Software
June 28, 2016
• Tier 0 software is defined as the minimum requirements for a computer to be managed by
SMARTcomputing. Currently Tier 0 software includes the initial OS, OS security and
functional updates, initial OS security configuration, computer hardware drivers, and a Virus
Scanner.
• Tier 1 software is defined as the default set of software installed on SMARTcomputing client
computers (in addition to Tier 0 software). A subset of the default software may be installed,
based on departmental needs.
• Tier 2 software is defined as available for unrestricted use on campus, or is licensed by the
University for widespread use on campus. This includes site-licensed software, freeware, locally
developed software, or commercial software available with no license cost to academia. Tier 2
Software is expected to be packaged to SMARTcomputing standards if shared across the
University.
• Tier 3 software is defined as departmentally, or individually purchased software. Tier 3
Software is expected to be packaged to SMARTcomputing standards if shared across the
University.
• CFI – Custom Factory Integration allows a software image to be sent to the Vendor for
installation on the Hard Drives of the SMARTcomputing Hardware.
Notes:
*It is expected that Tier 1 software will be installed on the computer during initial
setup, via SMS, once it is connected to the network. (*Alternatives need to be
explored for machines located on slow network links)
*The SMARTcomputing Technical Steering Committee will attempt to define an
initial list of “recommended” Tier 1 software and forward this list to the
SMARTcomputing Executive Oversight Committee for review.
*The Technical Steering Committee will also develop a procedure for adding and
removing Tier 1 software from that list. Additionally, a change management
procedure will be developed, addressing how and when software is upgraded on
deployed machines.
