Definitions
Adventure activity refers to a planned activity undertaken in a natural environment
which involves some physical challenge;
Codes of practice refer to a documented set of recommended or preferred
processes, actions or organisational structures to be applied in a given setting;
Operational plan refers to a plan reflecting different local conditions and the individual
circumstances of the operation, which may include but are not limited to – operating
conditions, trip or activity requirements, equipment, communications, emergency
planning and procedures, environmental conditions;
Workplace policies and procedures refer to documented instructions about workplace
expectations. These must include but are not limited to – customer service delivery,
personal presentation, legislation, organisational structure, business objectives.

Industry standards refer to standards that can be measured against external quality
management bodies, which include but are not limited to – Quality Tourism
Standards, Maritime New Zealand, Civil Aviation Authority, Qualmark, Ministry of
Agriculture and Forestry, NZ Transport Agency, Green Globe 21, OutdoorsMark.

For the purpose of this unit standard an adventure activity may be an activity used by
visitors to New Zealand, or by people travelling within or outside their own region of
New Zealand, who do not specifically consider themselves tourists.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of the industry standards for adventure activities.
Performance criteria
1.1
Industry standards for adventure activities are described in terms of their key
concepts.
Range
industry regulated standards, codes of practice.
1.2
Generic and sector-specific industry standards are described in relation to the
workplace’s operational plan.
1.3
Generic and sector-specific industry standards are described in accordance
with workplace policies and procedures.
1.4
The operational plan is compared to industry standards and explained in
relation to cases where the workplace operates outside the industry standards.
Range
includes but is not limited to – economic goals, safety standards,
environmental policies, philosophy of activity in the outdoors.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
