These practices reflect the concepts upon which they are based and provide guidelines for appropriate behaviour in Māori society. They also prescribe consequences for any breaches or when tikanga is not followed. Tikanga, in the context of this unit standard, deals with the rituals and practices observed from the time of death to the placement of the tūpāpaku in the care of the funeral director, whānau or other such persons in preparation for tangihanga. These practices may be determined by local marae, whānau, hapū and/or iwi in conjunction with bereavement services and support agencies. Mate ohorere – sudden death. 2 Instances of mate ohorere, and Coroner’s cases are not included in this unit standard. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe rituals associated with death and maintaining the dignity of the tūpāpaku prior to the tangihanga. Evidence requirements 1.1 The rituals associated with death are described in accordance with tikanga. NZQA Māori Qualifications Services SSB Code 194 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard may include but are not limited to – cultural observances, religious diversity, ōhākī, karakia, tuku wairua, waiata tangi, karanga, poroporoaki; evidence of three is required.
