Definition
Tikanga are cultural practices and procedures exercised by Māori in their daily lives.
These practices reflect the concepts upon which they are based and provide
guidelines for appropriate behaviour in Māori society. They also prescribe
consequences for any breaches or when tikanga is not followed. Tikanga, in the
context of this unit standard, deals with the rituals and practices observed from the
time of death to the placement of the tūpāpaku in the care of the funeral director,
whānau or other such persons in preparation for tangihanga. These practices may
be determined by local marae, whānau, hapū and/or iwi in conjunction with
bereavement services and support agencies.
Mate ohorere – sudden death.
2
Instances of mate ohorere, and Coroner’s cases are not included in this unit
standard.
