standard 4585.
purpose:
People credited with this unit standard are able to
demonstrate use of rope skills to maintain safety of self and
another worker for snowsport area operations, and to lower a
toboggan on snowsport area terrain.
This unit standard may be of interest to people working
towards their patrolling qualifications.
entry information:
Recommended: Unit 20151, Demonstrate skills with ropes,
knots, anchors, and belays for rock climbing and abseiling, or
demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
accreditation option:
Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry.
moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by Sport, Fitness and Recreation
Industry Training Organisation.

All activities must comply with the policies, procedures,
and requirements of the enterprises involved and any
relevant environmental, legislative and/or regulatory
requirements which include but are not limited to the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE),
Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation
Act 2001, and their subsequent amendments and
associated regulations.

Demonstrate use of rope skills to maintain safety of self and another worker for snowsport

Mountaineering equipment is described in relation to its use, care, and
limitations, with options for improvisation identified.
Range:
1.2
Anchors for a lowering system are placed on ice, snow and rock surfaces to
provide security for self and another worker.
Range:
1.3
rope, slings, karabiners, harness, helmet, anchors, belay device.
vertical and deadman snowstake/skis, artificial anchors,
icescrews.
Rope handling skills are demonstrated, and the equipment is handled efficiently
and safely.
Range:
coiling, uncoiling, tying on, attaching rope to belay and anchor
system(s), paying out, bringing in the rope.

A range of belay systems are identified, and a belay system selected and used
in the mountaineering situation.
