This unit standard covers the management of personal risks in
a security context.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of:
– personal factors that could affect the health and safety of
security personnel;
– organisational factors that could affect the health and safety
of security personnel;
– environmental factors that could affect the health and safety
of security personnel; and
– workplace risks from other people that could affect the health
and safety of security personnel.

This unit standard has been developed for learning and assessment in any relevant
security context, on job or off job.

and their subsequent amendments or replacements.

Definitions
Security personnel – for the purpose of this unit standard, personnel providing
specified private security services, in particular crowd control, property guarding, and
personal guarding.
PPE – personal protective equipment.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of personal factors that could affect the health and safety of
security personnel.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Describe personal factors that could affect the health and safety of security
personnel in terms of their effect on self.
Range
1.2
personal factors may include – stress, fatigue, anger, shift work,
influence of drugs and alcohol, poor health, poor diet, hydration,
fitness;
evidence of three is required.
Describe a measure to minimise risk to own health and safety for the personal
factors described in evidence requirement 1.1 in terms of personal
responsibility.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of organisational factors that could affect the health and safety of
security personnel.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Describe organisational factors that could affect the health and safety of
security personnel in terms of their effect on self.
Range
2.2
organisational factors may include but are not limited to – vehicles,
communication equipment, PPE, availability of resources and
equipment;
evidence of two is required.
Describe a measure to minimise risks to own health and safety for the
organisational factors described in evidence requirement 2.1 in terms of
relevant instructions.

Demonstrate knowledge of environmental factors that could affect the health and safety of
security personnel.

Evidence requirements
3.1
Describe environmental factors that could affect the health and safety of
security personnel in terms of their effect on self.
environmental factors may include but are not limited to –
exposure to noise, exposure to sun, proximity of traffic,
construction zones, chemical fumes, infectious substances,
heights, moving plant, machinery, electricity, toxic substances, slip
and trip hazards;
evidence of two is required.

Describe a measure to minimise the risks to own health and safety for the
environmental factors described in evidence requirement 3.1 in terms of
relevant instructions.
Outcome 4
Demonstrate knowledge of workplace risks from other people that may affect the health
and safety of security personnel.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Describe workplace risks from other people that could affect the health and
safety of security personnel in terms of their effect on self.
workplace risks from other people may include – intruders,
trespassers, non-compliant people, confrontational situations;
evidence of two is required.

4.2
Describe a measure to minimise the risks to own health and safety for the
workplace risks described in evidence requirement 4.1 in terms of relevant
instructions.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMRs). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
and assessors, and special resource requirements.
