This unit standard is performed under the control and
direction of a supervising officer.

Safety procedures include: codes of safe working
practice, company safety policy and procedures, the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and the
Maritime Transport Act 1994.

System means any system for which an engineer is
responsible, other than the main propulsion system.

Monitoring of equipment may include: the reading and
recording of data from gauges and other instruments,
and the use of the senses of sight, hearing, and touch.

Recording of data from monitoring equipment may be
done using log books or running sheets and computer
data base printouts.

Prepare auxiliary equipment and systems for operation.
performance criteria
1.1
Systems are prepared for operation prior to start up, and tested in accordance
with manufacturer’s operating instructions.
1.2
Systems are started and gauges and instruments are monitored and checked to
ensure compliance with manufacturer’s operating instructions.
1.3
Systems are managed to maintain efficiency of the vessel’s operation and to
avoid damage to the systems.
1.4
Safety procedures are followed during the start up process and operation of the
system.
1.5
Documentation is completed and dispatched to the correct personnel within
stated time frames.

2.1
Systems are started up and shut down in accordance with manufacturer's
operating instructions.
2.2
Safety procedures are followed during the start up and shut down process.
2.3
Data from monitoring systems relating to the start up or shut down are recorded
according to prescribed procedures.

Monitor systems efficiencies.
performance criteria
3.1
Systems are monitored to confirm that they remain in a state of equilibrium.
3.2
Deviations from an equilibrium state are attended to in accordance with
prescribed guidelines, and within a time frame which maintains the operational
effectiveness of the vessel.
3.3
Data from maintenance of systems are recorded in accordance with company
procedures.
3.4
Monitoring activity tasks on equipment are completed in accordance with
equipment manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines.
