NZQA registered unit standard 6580 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate understanding of hazards, routine health care, emergency responses, and ongoing care of horses Level 3 Purpose Credits 4 This unit standard is intended for people who are required to demonstrate understanding of hazards, health care and emergency responses in the routine day-to-day care of horses in an equine industry context. People will be working under limited supervision with responsibility for their work routines. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Workplace and/or stable procedures Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz. 2 Candidates must demonstrate competency in a commercial horse workplace. 3 In the context of this unit standard, an emergency is a sudden, serious, unexpected or impending, and sometimes dangerous situation involving a horse or horses that may cause or have already caused injury or loss of life, and requires immediate action. 4 In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify potential hazards involving horses and implement measures to ensure safety of horses and people. Outcome 2 Demonstrate understanding of the actions to take in the event of an emergency involving horses. Evidence requirements 2.1 Identifies the uses of individual items in a comprehensive First Aid kit for horses. 2.2 Describe the workplace procedures for immediate course of action resulting from an emergency situation. Outcome 3 Provide assistance while veterinary treatment is being carried out. Evidence requirements 3.1 Holds the horse for the veterinarian and applies restraints. 3.2 Runs the horse out to allow assessment of action. Outcome 4 Carry out routine health care of horses in training. Evidence requirements 4.1 Monitors health parameters of temperature, pulse, respiration, dehydration. 4.2 Administers routine health treatments. Outcome 5 Provide ongoing care for a horse following sickness or injury in accordance with workplace procedures. Evidence requirements 5.1 Carries out ongoing care and administers treatments. Range topical treatment, foot treatment, poultice, bandaging.
