Purpose
This unit standard is intended for people who are required to
prepare thoroughbred racehorses by fitting gear for exercise
and completing post exercise activities while working under
close supervision in an equine industry context.

Candidates must demonstrate competency in a commercial horse enterprise.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Checks gear for safety, and fits gear on a horse in preparation for training.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Identifies the types, purpose, and correct fit of saddlery.
1.2
Prepares the horse for gearing up which may include removing cover and
grooming.
1.3
Checks and fits accessories.
1.4
Checks and fits the saddle and saddle cloth.
1.5
Checks and fits the bridle with bit.
1.6
Reports any ill-fitting and unsafe saddlery.

Fit protection to the lower foreleg and hind leg of the horse to achieve its correct purpose.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Fits foreleg and hind leg protection.
Outcome 3
Carry out post-exercise activities with the horse restrained as appropriate.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Removes gear in a methodical manner.
3.2
Provides for horse’s wellbeing requirements following exercise, and checks and
reports health and any injury according to workplace procedures.
Range
may include but is not limited to - cool down, cover, water.
3.3
Releases the horse into a designated area.
3.4
Disassembles, cleans and reassembles gear used for exercise.
