Purpose
This unit standard is intended for people who are required to
carry out routine day to day care, feeding, grooming and
handling of horses in stables and/or yards while working under
close supervision in an equine industry context.

Candidates must demonstrate competency in either a commercial horse enterprise or
a recognised voluntary equine organisation, for example not-for-profit and/or
therapeutic riding organisations.

In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be
evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good
understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they
have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the
different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident
that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Prepares feed, and feeds horses both with the horse present and when stable
and/or yard is empty.
2.2
Identifies the features of good and poor feed quality.
Range

Observes, and reports normal horse behaviour and variations, maintains
records if required.

Clean stables and/or yards, and surrounds.

Cleans stables and/or yards and replaces bedding.

Identifies types and quality of bedding.
3.3
Cleans and maintains stable and/or yard immediate surrounds.
3.4
Observes and reports status of consumables.

Groom and cover horses.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Restrains, and grooms horses consistent with the intended activity
4.2
Administers routine foot care including hoof cleaning safely and effectively.
4.3
Removes and replaces covers.

Demonstrate understanding of horse’s natural herd instincts, senses, body language, and
behavioural characteristics when handling.
