NZQA registered unit standard 29166 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Provide routine care for horses in stables and/or yards under close supervision Level 2 Credits 22 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are required to carry out routine day to day care, feeding, grooming and handling of horses in stables and/or yards while working under close supervision in an equine industry context. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Workplace procedures Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz. 2 Candidates must demonstrate competency in either a commercial horse enterprise or a recognised voluntary equine organisation, for example not-for-profit and/or therapeutic riding organisations. 3 In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify horses. Evidence requirements 1.1 Identifies horses by colour, distinguishing features, and/or brands. Outcome 2 Feed and water horses in stables and/or yards. Range appearance, texture, smell 2.3 Cleans water receptacle and replaces water if required. 2.4 Observes, and reports normal horse behaviour and variations, maintains records if required. Outcome 3 Clean stables and/or yards, and surrounds. Evidence requirements 3.1 Cleans stables and/or yards and replaces bedding. 3.2 Identifies types and quality of bedding. 3.3 Cleans and maintains stable and/or yard immediate surrounds. 3.4 Observes and reports status of consumables. Outcome 4 Groom and cover horses. Evidence requirements 4.1 Restrains, and grooms horses consistent with the intended activity 4.2 Administers routine foot care including hoof cleaning safely and effectively. 4.3 Removes and replaces covers. Outcome 5 Demonstrate understanding of horse’s natural herd instincts, senses, body language, and behavioural characteristics when handling. Range leading into and out of stables and/or yards; catching and letting go in stables and/or yards; leading past other horses; holding, walking and trotting out for external contractors; when horse is frightened.
