Evidence of the elements of this unit standard may be presented across the following
contexts:
a
joinery includes but is not limited to – hatches, handrails, water tight windows,
port holes, windscreens, toe rails, cappings, companionways, doors, external
storage lockers, skylights, transom doors, dorades, and landing platforms.
b
substrates may be – timber, fibre-reinforced composites (FRC), aluminium, and
steel.

The following apply to the performance of all elements of this unit standard:
a
All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in
accordance with company procedures.
b
All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
worksite health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal,
product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required
under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent and
delegated legislation.
c
All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
worksite environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal,
product, and worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations
required under the Resource Management Act 1991, and subsequent and
delegated legislation.
d
All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management
requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare for installation of exterior boat joinery, modules and components.
Performance criteria
1.1
Selected fastenings and sealants are compatible with hardware and substrate
materials, and meet job requirements for durability and appearance.
1.2
Installation position is located in accordance with job requirements.
1.3
Position is checked for not compromising the boat’s structural integrity, and as
being suitable for installation as defined by work practice.
1.4
Where a departure from the intended installation position is required, the
situation is reported in accordance with company procedures.
Range
1.5
examples of departures include the requirement to change the
location, and the provision of additional strengthening or hardware.
Surfaces are prepared in accordance with job requirements and joinery
manufacturer’s specifications and instructions.

Element 2
Carry out the installation.
Performance criteria
2.1
Opening and frame sizes are checked for accuracy in accordance with job
requirements and specifications.
2.2
Joinery units are attached to the boat structure in accordance with job
requirements and specifications.
2.3
Water proofing is installed to job requirements and specifications.
Range

Element 3
Test the installation against specifications.
Performance criteria
3.1
Completed installation provides a watertight contact between the joinery and the
boat structure.
3.2
Completed installation does not interfere with boat systems, or weaken the
boat’s structure.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
