Definitions
Surfaces include already painted surfaces, immediately adjacent painted or prepared
surfaces, fittings, glazing, timberwork, plant and equipment surfaces.
Protection includes protection from – overspray, work traffic, hoses, impact accidents,
spillages.
Job specifications, either written or verbal definition of the job used for assessment.
Job requirements, requirements that may or may not be specified but require correct
choices to achieve including: following safety and workplace procedures and meeting
generally accepted trade practice standards.

This unit standard applies to the marine context where lines to be marked and
masked are usually not straight or parallel and are marked on compound or 3
dimensional surfaces. Competence must be demonstrated in marking and masking
onto compound surfaces.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Mark and mask fair lines on boats.
Performance criteria
1.1
Lines defining perimeters of areas to be painted are marked in accordance with
job specifications.
Range
1.2
Masking tape is selected in accordance with job requirements.

may include but is not limited to – waterlines, cove stripes, boot
top stripes, colour transitions, non-skid perimeters.

Surface protection is applied to boat surfaces in accordance with job
requirements.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter–institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
