This unit standard is for people in service stations who will be required to carry out the dispensing of CNG (compressed natural gas) as part of their forecourt duties.

The following legislation, regulations, standards, and their amendments are required to be consulted and followed where applicable:

– Dangerous Goods Act, 1974;

– Dangerous Goods (Class 2 Gases) Regulations, 1980;

– NZS 5425 Code of Practice For CNG Compressor and Refuelling Stations;

Traffic Regulations, 1976 Amendment No. 7 (90 O);

– Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of CNG as an engine fuel.

Evidence requirements

1.1 The properties of CNG are described.

Range composition, uses, odour, vapour density, combustion range, octane rating, ignition temperature, effects of compressing the gas.

Demonstrate knowledge of safety relating to CNG dispensing.

Range legislation, regulations, and standards referred to under explanatory notes.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Safety provisions on site and hazardous zones are described.

Range emergency shut-off procedures, warning notices and signs, fire fighting equipment, restricted areas.

2.2 Action in event of a leak is established.

Range at fill point, at cylinder or pipe connections, at station refuelling point, at storage area.

2.3 Action in event of fire is established.

Range leaks burning at source, fire involving vehicles.

2.4 On site first aid and emergency procedures are identified.

Range cold contact burns, heat burns, eye contamination, gassing.

Outcome 3

Locate CNG equipment.

Evidence requirements

3.1 The location of the CNG equipment on a vehicle is identified.

Range passenger car, light commercial vehicle, truck; cylinder/s, cylinder valve, fill points, master shut-off valve, pressure gauge, pressure regulator, change over switch.

3.2 The location of the CNG station equipment on the site is identified.

Range pressure relief valves, pressure gauges, bulk storage cylinders, shut-off valves, compressor, dispenser and refuelling equipment.

Outcome 4

Refuel a vehicle with CNG.

Evidence requirements

4.1 The certification of the vehicle to be refuelled is verified.

Range current inspection certificate, CNG labels.

The refuelling is carried out in accordance with NZS 5425 Code of Practice for

CNG Compressor and Refuelling Stations.

Outcome 5

Carry out on-site operational checks on refuelling equipment.

Evidence requirements

Dispenser hoses are inspected, and any damage is reported to the supervisor. 5.1

5.2 Filling probes are inspected prior to fill, and any damage to the "o" rings is reported immediately to the supervisor.

5.3 The dispenser is checked for operation and security, and any faults found are reported to the supervisor.

5.4 Daily maintenance check on refuelling equipment is completed according to site requirements.
