Explanatory notes 1 Definitions A light utility vehicle (LUV) (previously known as an ATVU or SPV) refers to a lightweight vehicle (less than 1000kg), principally designed for off-road use, with a steering wheel and side-by-side seating for at least one passenger. A LUV has some or all of the following features – a carry tray, rollover protection bars, a minimum of four wheels, low pressure tyres, automatic transmission, differential. Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or written instructions to staff on policies and procedures for use and safety of vehicles and machinery in the workplace. 2 For the purposes of this unit standard, flat terrain is defined as class A and B land under the Land Use Capability Classification, which comprises slopes between 0-7º. More detail is available at http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/research/soil/luc/. 3 Assessment During assessment, manufacturer’s recommendations and legislative requirements for the minimum age of a person driving a LUV must be complied with. 4 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the – Land Transport Act 1998, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and their subsequent amendments. Evidence requirements 1.1 Check of manufacturer’s recommendations identifies suitability of the LUV for the anticipated activity. Range 1.2 check covers – intended use, brakes, tyres, rollover protection, number of drive wheels, configuration, provision for passengers, load capacities, driver and passenger restraints (eg seat belts). Vehicle pre-drive safety check is carried out in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. Range check covers – tyres, wheels, brakes, controls, lights, electrics, oil, fluids, fuel, carry rack and tray, couplings. 1.3 Personal protective equipment is worn that is appropriate to the situation in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. 1.4 The route is planned in accordance with the terrain and weather conditions. Outcome 2 Drive a LUV on flat terrain. Evidence requirements 2.1 LUV is driven at speeds which are appropriate to conditions, traction is maintained, and risk of damage to self, others and property is minimised. Range 2.2 steering, braking, manoeuvring, gear selection, reversing, parking, use of seat belts. LUV is parked in a safe and stable position, and any faults are reported or fixed, in accordance with workplace procedures.
