Explanatory notes

Definitions
A light utility vehicle (LUV) (previously known as an ATVU or SPV) is a lightweight
vehicle (less than 1000kg), principally designed for off-road use, with a steering
wheel and side-by-side seating for at least one passenger. A LUV has some or all of
the following features – a carry tray, rollover protection bars, a minimum of four
wheels, low pressure tyres, automatic transmission, differential.
Trailed equipment refers to an implement which is attached to, and trailed behind, the
LUV. For assessment against this unit standard, the size and weight of the trailed
equipment must be within manufacturer’s specifications.
Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or written instructions to staff on policies
and procedures for use and safety of vehicles and machinery in the workplace.

Assessment
During assessment, manufacturer’s recommendations and legislative requirements
for the minimum age of a person driving a LUV must be complied with.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the – Land
Transport Act 1998, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and their
subsequent amendments.

Evidence requirements
1.1
The route is planned in accordance with the terrain and weather conditions.
1.2
Trailed equipment and LUV coupling checks are carried out in accordance with
manufacturer’s specifications and workplace procedures.

1.3
LUV and trailed equipment are controlled at speeds appropriate to the
conditions, and risk of damage to self, others and property is minimised.

Stability of LUV and trailed equipment is maintained while driving and turning.
1.5
Traction is maintained in difficult situations and is recovered in situations where
loss of traction occurs.
