Explanatory notes
1
Definition
A light utility vehicle (LUV) (previously known as an ATVU or SPV) is a lightweight
vehicle (less than 1000kg), principally designed for off-road use, with a steering
wheel and side-by-side seating for at least one passenger. A LUV has some or all of
the following features – a carry tray, rollover protection bars, a minimum of four
wheels, low pressure tyres, automatic transmission, differential.

For the purposes of this unit standard, hilly terrain is defined as class D, E and F land
under the Land Use Capability Classification, which comprises slopes between 16º
and 35º. More detail is available at

Assessment
During assessment, manufacturer’s recommendations and legislative requirements
for the minimum age of a person driving a LUV must be complied with.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the – Land
Transport Act 1998, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and their
subsequent amendments.

Evidence requirements
1.1
The route is planned in accordance with the terrain and weather conditions.
1.2
LUV is controlled at speeds appropriate to the conditions, and risk of damage to
self, others and property is minimised.
Range
1.3
steering, braking, manoeuvrability, gear selection, reversing, use
of seat belts, parking, hill start.
Traction is maintained in difficult situations and is recovered in situations where
loss of traction occurs.
