NZQA registered unit standard 21644 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Review personal performance as an official in a competitive sports event Level 3 Purpose Credits 3 This unit standard is designed primarily for people seeking to further develop their skills as a sports official. People credited with this unit standard are, as an official in a competitive sports event, able to complete a match report, record and evaluate personal performance, and develop and implement a plan to improve personal performance. Classification Recreation and Sport > Sport Officiating Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard relates to the learning areas Practical Officiating and Communication Skills (under Game Management) from Calling the Game: Developing Quality Officiating. This is the national framework for developing sports officials and is available at http://www.sparc.org.nz/en-nz/communities-andclubs/Toolkit-for-Officials/Learning-Areas/. 2 Evidence requirements for assessment as an official are detailed in Assessment Guidelines for each sport code and can be obtained from Skills Active Aotearoa Limited info@skillsactive.org.nz on request. 3 Definitions An event, in the context of this unit standard, may refer to a match, competition, race, game, tournament, or other competitive sporting fixture. Participant primarily refers to the competitor but may also include spectators, coaches or other sport team members. Sport rules and regulations refer to the rules and regulations of the sporting code used for assessment and also the rules and regulations of the specific sporting event used for assessment. In the context of this unit standard, emotional intelligence is defined as the capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing our own emotions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Completed match report includes record of all match details required by the sport rules and regulations. Range 1.2 Key personal judgements, decisions, recommendations, and/or actions are identified. Range 1.3 match details include but are not limited to – date, venue, participants, competition results, other officials, specific incidents. judgements and decisions, recommendations and/or actions may include but are not limited to – signalling and communication; positioning; consistency; management of conflict; management of participants, coaches and spectators; management of stoppages; own relationship with other officials; safety of venue, equipment and participants. Key personal judgements, decisions, recommendations, and/or actions are evaluated according to the requirements of the sport rules and regulations. Range requirements may include but are not limited to – official’s code of conduct, accepted safety practices, interpretation of the rules and regulations of the sport, intent of the rules and regulations of the sport, accepted positioning and communication practices, participant management protocols. Outcome 2 Develop and implement a plan to improve personal performance as an official in a competitive sports event. Evidence requirements 2.1 Areas of personal performance as an official that require improvement are identified in accordance with the results of the self-evaluation in evidence requirement 1.3. 2.2 Changes to improve the quality of officiating in the identified areas of personal performance are identified.
