People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify the common features of conflict situations in a sports officiating context; describe the consequences of conflict in a sports officiating environment; and develop, apply, and reflect on conflict resolution strategies in a sports officiating event. Participant primarily refers to the competitor but may also include spectators, coaches or other sport team members. Sport rules and regulations relate to the rules and regulations of the sporting code used for assessment and also the rules and regulations of the specific sporting event used for assessment. Evidence requirements 1.1 Common features of conflict situations are identified in terms of signs and causes. Range signs – verbal, non-verbal, body language, positioning; causes – disagreement from participant over official’s call, perceived bias, frustration with performance and/or result, misunderstanding instructions and/or rulings, sledging. Outcome 2 Describe the consequences of conflict in a sports officiating environment. Evidence requirements 2.1 Consequences of conflict situations within a sports officiating environment are described in accordance with ‘Calling the Game’ Framework. Range 2.2 disrupted event, unsafe environment, tension between participants, tension between participant support personnel, potential affect on officiating performance. Appropriate responses by an official following conflict situation are described in accordance with national sport organisation rules and regulations, and the specific event regulations. Range evidence of official response for at least three differing conflict situations is required. Outcome 3 Develop, apply, and reflect on conflict resolution strategies in a sports officiating event. Evidence requirements 3.1 Strategies to minimise conflict situations are developed in accordance with the ‘Calling the Game’ Framework, national sport organisation rules and regulations, and the specific event regulations. Range evidence of at least three strategies is required. Range 3.3 26221 version 2 Page 3 of 4 evidence of at least three strategies is required. Reflection on implementation of strategies is consistent with the ‘Calling the Game’ Framework and results in improved performance as an official in resolving conflict situations. Range evidence required of reflection on implementation of at least one strategy to minimise conflict; at least one strategy to resolve conflict situation.
