Purpose
This qualification, aimed at those wanting to start their career as a salesperson, will enable
a person to:
 understand marketing basics, target markets and their customers, and buyer behaviour
 develop effective and trusting business relationships and use prospecting techniques
with ethical behaviour
 recognise one’s selling style and achieve goals and targets
 understand the actions of the salesperson and the impact of those actions on their own
business and the customer’s business
 manage time, sales expectations and professional development to gain success
 negotiate and close a sale within the salespersons level of authority
 complete sales administration to track sales performance and provide product
information to customers.
This qualification is an entry-level qualification for the junior sales professional in the sales
industry. It will enable a person to use theoretical sales knowledge, use discretion and
judgement; and apply a range of known sales techniques to operate as a successful
salesperson. People will also use influencing and negotiation skills for the closure of a
sale within the bounds of responsibility designated to the position.
The core skills and knowledge required of a professional salesperson are outlined in the
compulsory section. The elective enables the inclusion of other industry competencies to
enable a person to work in their selected field of work.
Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to take up occupations in
the workforce as a junior sales representative, sales supervisor, sales consultant, sales
team leader or telesales person.
This qualification leads to the National Certificate in Sales (Level 4) [Ref: 1650].
Special Notes
Recognition of current competence (RCC) acknowledges the skills and knowledge gained
from work and experience, or from courses or study already undertaken. Candidates may
go through an assessment process to gain credit for unit standards. The RCC process is
carried out by registered assessors and accredited providers. Candidates are encouraged
to contact ServiceIQ for information regarding RCC for the purposes of this qualification.
