1013 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS, 3 hours credit
Survey of industry; introducing automated data processing with effects on business and society; and survey of
hardware and software. Lecture 3 hours.
EXPANDED COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Required for computer information systems (CIS) and business majors, the course also serves those
interested in becoming computer literate. For CIS majors, the course is listed as a concurrent offering with COBOL I.
Business majors are expected to take the course early in their program and certainly before enrolling in the upper
division courses in which computers and software packages are used as a problem solving tool. While most students
are CIS, and/or business majors, others take the course to update in preparation for the job market.
Upon completion of the course, students should:
...have a basic knowledge of how to use software packages
...know what a computer is, what it can and cannot do, how it operates and how it may be instructed to
solve problems
...have a fundamental data processing vocabulary--one which enables communications with computer
professionals
...understand how computers pervade society
LAB EQUIPMENT:
IBM Compatible microcomputers are available in the Academic Computing Laboratory (Burch Hall) for student use.

CREDIT: Three hours upon successful completion of course.
TESTS:
Four exams are to be given, three one-hour (50 min) exams during the semester and a final exam at the end of the
course. Exams are to cover both the main text material and material related to the software applications. Exams are to
be closed book.
PARTICPATION POLICY:
Students will be graded on their participation in the electronic system called Blackboard. Students activities are
monitored and maintained by the electronic system and students shall earn points based on their level of participation.
All assignments/projects are to be turned in on the date due or they are worth zero (0) points.
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: All assignments are to be turned in using the Assignments area within Blackboard.
No other method of delivery is acceptable.
