Classification Tikanga > Tikanga Concepts Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes Tikanga are cultural practices and procedures exercised by Māori in their daily lives. These practices reflect the concepts upon which they are based and provide guidelines for appropriate behaviour in Māori society. They also prescribe consequences for any breaches or when tikanga is not followed. They can be particular to a local region or a local iwi. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify the concepts of whānau, hapū and iwi in accordance with tikanga. Evidence requirements 1.1 Identification includes ngā atua as the basis for the concepts of whānau, hapū and iwi in accordance with tikanga. 1.2 Identification includes whakapapa and its importance in determining whānau, hapū and iwi in accordance with tikanga. 1.3 Identification includes the status of eponymous ancestors in accordance with tikanga. Outcome 2 Explain the concepts of whānau, hapū and iwi in accordance with tikanga. Range may include but is not limited to – tuakana, tuākana, teina, tēina, mātāmua; evidence of four is required.
