NZQA registered unit standard 16044 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe historical events of one hapu or iwi before Pakeha contact Level 2 Credits 4 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the settlement of Aotearoa by a hapū or iwi; describe the hapū or iwi interaction and relationships with other tribal groups since settlement; and describe key events or details which are the hallmarks of the hapū or iwi. Classification Tikanga > Tikanga Concepts Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Local iwi or hapū curriculum aims and objectives take precedence with this unit standard. 2 The context of the inquiries required should begin with the local rohe or takiwa. Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori kaupapa, tikanga and take. 3 Definitions of local Māori words and concepts in the local dialect must be verified by the local iwi and or hapū concerned. 4 Resource support includes but is not limited to the following: Buck, P, The Coming of the Māori, (Christchurch, NZ: Whitcoulls Ltd, 1982). Kelly, L, Tainui, (Christchurch, NZ: Capper Press, 1980). Stafford, D. M, Te Arawa: A History of the Arawa People, (Auckland, NZ: Reed Books, 1967). Waitangi Tribunal Reports, (Wellington, NZ: Waitangi Tribunal). 5 Certain events are recounted as turning points or critical events in the history and development of a hapū or iwi and often characterise the hapū or iwi. For example, key battles, events associated with the taking of land, births and deaths of rangatira. These events are often immortalised in whakatauki, pepeha, moteatea, whakairo and other forms of expression.
