Due to the use of tools “special note 3” applies during this
assessment.
Activities are to be carried out under kaitohu supervision with
minimal guidance.
All resources will be provided.
A camera if you have one or a cell phone to take photos.

Instructions
You will
 identify local sources of harakeke
 harvest harakeke for muka production
 identify traditional and contemporary tools used to produce muka
 produce muka
 observe and practice tikanga and kawa principles during the harvest in regards to the
bio-sustainability of the plants during the harvest.
The assessor/kaitohu will be with you when you harvest the harakeke to ensure you
observe bullet points 5 in this box.
Take numerous photographs of you at each stage of the process (while you are working),
and keep them in a portfolio.
Attach the photos in your journals and write a description beside each one.
Activity 1 (Performance criteria 1.1)
Research and identify
 at least two or more local sources of harakeke.
 who has the mandate to give permission to harvest the pa harakeke.

Research and identify traditional and contemporary tools used to produce muka.
Activity 2 (Performance criteria 1.1)
Gain permission to harvest the harakeke in accordance with the information in your
research.

Activity 2a (Performance criteria 2.2)
Sharpen the tools.
Using a sharp tool, harvest enough harakeke to make muka.
During the harvest you must
 practice and maintain the tikanga and kawa principles in regards to the biosustainability management of the plants.
Activity 2b (Performance criteria 2.3)
Assemble suitable whenu to produce muka.
Make sure
 the quantity of whenu is enough to produce muka
 the quality of the whenu is suitable to produce muka
 the whenu are a suitable size to produce muka.
Activity 3 (Performance criteria, 3.2)
Select and assemble the correct tools and materials to complete the project tools include
kuku, scrapers, scissors, haehae, string.
Activity 3a (Performance criteria 4.1)
Strip and prepare the harakeke to the required size to produce muka.
Activity 3b (Performance criteria 4.2)
Using the correct tool scrape the whenu by applying pressure to the blade of the tool until
the muka is exposed.
Activity 3c (Performance criteria 4.3, 4.4)
Scrape and rub the fibre until filmy substance on harakeke disappears and clean muka
appears.
Keep scraping and rubbing the muka until it meets the required consistency according to
the kaitohu directions.
